After years marked by the Great Depression and World War II, the late 1940s and 1950s brought a renewed sense of optimism to communities across America. Here in Emporia, families returned home, businesses found their footing once again, and the community began building toward a brighter future.
It was a season of growth, resilience, and opportunity.
By 1950, Emporia's population had climbed back above 15,000 residents, reflecting the community's recovery and steady progress. Families were purchasing homes, opening businesses, and investing in their futures. While life looked much different than it does today, the values that shaped the community remain familiar: hard work, strong relationships, and a commitment to helping neighbors succeed.
In the 1950s, the average home cost less than $10,000, gasoline was around 20 cents per gallon, and families were focused on creating stability after years of uncertainty. Across town, local businesses continued serving the community while helping fuel Emporia's growth.
For ESB, this decade marked a major milestone.
Celebrating 50 Years of Community Banking
In 1951, Emporia State Bank celebrated its 50th Anniversary.
Reaching the half-century mark was no small accomplishment. The bank had successfully served the community through economic highs and lows, two world wars, and decades of change. Throughout it all, ESB remained committed to helping local families, farmers, and businesses achieve their goals.
The anniversary celebration drew more than 1,000 people, a remarkable turnout that reflected the relationships the bank had built over its first fifty years.
One of the most treasured memories from that celebration is a photograph of Karen Sommers, then just five years old, handing out carnations to guests attending the event. Today, Karen continues the Wayman family legacy as an owner of ESB Financial, creating a special connection between the bank's past and present.
A Piece of History Preserved
As ESB prepared for its 125th Anniversary celebration, another remarkable discovery was made.
Many of the original flower cards distributed during the 50th Anniversary celebration had been carefully saved and preserved over the decades. What may have seemed like a small keepsake in 1951 has become a meaningful piece of the bank's history today.
These cards, along with photographs and other anniversary artifacts, help tell the story of the people who have shaped ESB throughout the years.
Visitors can view many of these items as part of ESB's 125th Anniversary timeline display and historical exhibits.
Growing Together
Perhaps the most meaningful part of this decade is the reminder that ESB's story has always been closely tied to the story of Emporia itself.
As families rebuilt, businesses expanded, and the community grew, ESB grew alongside them. The bank's success was never simply measured by assets or buildings, but by the relationships formed and the trust earned over generations.
More than seventy years later, those same principles continue to guide ESB today.
As we celebrate 125 years of community banking, we are proud to honor the people, memories, and milestones that helped build the foundation we stand on today.
